Artist Statement

About me, Hayley.

I am endlessly inquisitive about the world around me and the many moving parts that set the stage for my day-to-day experience. I work in graphic design and a variety of media to investigate this surrounding world. From conception, ideation, iteration, and assembly I want my designs to be meaningful, to create a visual language that encapsulates the feeling of my subject. I often find myself an observer of human nature. Through my lens I find humor, power, and passion within the minute interactions between myself and others. I am fueled to make design that explores written and non-verbal communication, one that emulates the complex feelings of these aforementioned interactions and emotions through form, imagery, and type.

I use digital tools that can provide deeper meaning when layered on top of analog forms such as collage, illustration and painting. These physical processes and exploration of the analog are integral to my creative process. I pull assets from my surrounding world, collecting misplaced objects, taking notes in conversation, and finding tools and scraps that hold potential.

I became passionate about graphic design once I started taking notice of how it permeates into everything we see and interact with. I knew I wanted to be a part in molding the world us. Creating work in my perspective as a queer woman, to relate to how others experience the world and diversify our perception of design is what drives me to create.
